Excerpt #76, Rocking-Chair Moon

Grandpa To The Rescue, Again
—Ben

Carly and I are spending the night
at Grandpa’s place
so Mom won’t pace the floor, sleepless,
waiting,
or wake up every time
the wind makes a sound like a throat,
clearing.

When I show up at 3:30,
Carly’s already there,
drinking coffee with Grandpa,
ready to serve me a late snack of attitude
and thinking about launching into
a grilling, I can tell,
but Grandpa just winks, defusing her.

For now.
