Excerpt #77, Rocking-Chair Moon

Short Ride, Long Silence
—Carly

On the ride home from Grandpa’s
I ask Ben an innocent question
about how he and Tess
spent the rest of the night

after they left the dance so early,
and he gets all defensive and says
he’d rather Mom ask the Mom questions,

And just so you know, he adds,
that sophisticated east coast
Dwight character of yours
wasted half his time looking down
the front of your dress.

So I tell him
You might be wearing Dad’s clothes
and in control of Dad’s steering wheel
(for now) but you’re definitely not Dad.
We spend the rest of the drive fuming,
silently.
